Career Highlights

Before joining Schulz Trade Law PLLC as Of Counsel, James served as Senior Counsel - International Trade and Artificial Intelligence at EchoStar Corp/DISH Network in Englewood, Colorado. EchoStar is a Fortune 200 technology and telecom public company with over $16 billion in revenues and 14,000 employees, operating domestically and internationally. In this role, he focused on international trade law, specializing in export controls, global compliance matters, and the development of a comprehensive company-wide Artificial Intelligence ("AI") policy. His duties encompassed day-to-day operations and long-term strategic planning for the company.

 

Key responsibilities in international trade matters included:

  • Establishing and implementing a trade compliance program for various business units, addressing regulations like EAR, ITAR, CBP, OFAC, and FCPA.

  • Assessing the export control risks of a cloud-native O-RAN 5G wireless network and implementing necessary controls.

  • Ensuring compliance with the ITAR and EAR in satellite operations.

  • Providing export control training and overseeing compliance for key personnel.

  • Investigating FCPA concerns in foreign business partnerships.

  • Advising on semiconductor sanctions related to manufacturing in China.  

  • Monitoring Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) compliance.

  • Guiding the supply chain team on customs matters and job postings for controlled technology positions.

  • Managing sanctions screening processes, evaluating Google G-Suite applications for export controls, and streamlining trade compliance functions post-merger.

 

James’s work experience includes roles, such as an International Trade Attorney at Givens & Johnston PLLC where he advised clients on Customs laws, filed Prior Disclosures (PDs), and negotiated releases of seized goods. He also served as President of CO Vouch LLC, leading a software startup, and owned Imperium Customs Brokers, offering Customs Brokerage services.

Additionally, he practiced as a solo attorney focusing on intellectual property law and worked as an Intellectual Property Attorney at Arnold and Associates, drafting patent and trademark applications.
